Abstract

This research presents an analysis of the websites of 20 Cuban universities attached to the Ministry of Higher Education (MES) of Cuba. Its design is based on the construction of the analytical representation of four fundamental dimensions: content, appearance, accessibility, and SEO positioning. The essential objective of the work is to analyze the state of the websites of Cuban universities. To do this, we proceed to the definition and application of a group of indicators that will allow us to analyze the content, appearance, accessibility, and SEO positioning respectively. Based on the scientific literature on digital communication management and, specifically, on the management of university websites, these indicators and a series of parameters were defined that made it possible to evaluate the current situation of the Cuban university. This study on Cuban university websites shows not very encouraging results in content management and, above all, deficiencies in communication and dissemination of the functions of these centers, as institutions that link teaching and research with social development.

Author Biographies

Amelie Montero Esteva, University of Havana

Assistant professor, a specialist in Institutional communication (2015), and a Master’s in communication sciences (2017) from the University of Havana. She is a researcher in university evaluation, organizational communication, and public relations. She is currently a doctoral student in the interuniversity communication program at the University of Malaga and the communication sciences program at the University of Havana. She is a member of the Association of Social Communicators.

Ana Castillo Díaz, University of Malaga

Ph.D. in Communication from the University of Extremadura. Associate Professor at the University of Malaga. She teaches in the degree of Advertising and Public Relations and the Master of Strategic Management and Innovation in Communication. Her main lines of research focus on the field of strategic communication and university communication.

Aline Marie Rodríguez Rodríguez, University of Havana

Teacher, researcher, journalist, and editor. She has a degree in Journalism and a Master's in Communication from the University of Havana (UH). Since 2013 she is a professor in the Department of Social Communication and since 2018, she has been a member of the Institutional Communication Group, both from the UH School of Communication. She specialized in theoretical studies on visuality, Cuban photojournalism, and urban imaginaries and photography. She is co-author of the ebook Periodistas Cubanos de la República 1902-1958 (Ediciones Temas, 2015). She has lectured on these topics at national and international events. She is a member of the Association of Social Communicators and the Association of Pedagogues of Cuba.
